When the direct object of a verb in a composed tense is placed immediately before the verb instead of afterwards, the past participle will take into account the number and gender of that direct complement, even though the auxiliary is not ETRE but AVOIR.

As-tu fini ta lecture ? Oui, je l’ai finie.

Did you finish your reading? Yes, I finished it.

As-tu fini tes exercices de maths ? Oui, je les ai finis.

Did you finish your math exercises? Yes, I finished them.

As-tu téléphoné à Carole ? Oui, je lui ai téléphoné.

Did you phone Carole? Yes, I phoned her.

As-tu fini les préparations du repas ? Non, je ne les ai pas finies.

Have you finished the preparations for the meal? No, I haven’t finished them.

Tu as vu ma soeur ? Oui, je l’ai vue. 

Have you seen my sister? Yes, I have seen her.

Tu as trouvé tes amis ? Non, je ne les ai pas trouvés.

Did you find your friends? No, I didn’t find them.

Tu as regardé la télé ? Non, je ne l’ai pas regardée.

Did you watch TV? No, I didn’t watch it.

Vous avez appris vos leçons ? Oui, nous les avons apprises.

Have you learned your lessons? Yes, we have learned them.

Ils ont écrit leurs lettres de motivation ? Oui, ils les ont écrites.

Did they write their cover letters? Yes, they wrote them.

Elle a acheté des fleurs ? Non, elle ne les a pas achetées.

Did she buy flowers? No, she didn’t buy them.

Où est ton argent ? Je l’ai oublié à la maison.

Where is your money? I left it at home.

Tu as pris tes clés ? Non, je les ai oubliées dans la voiture.

Did you take your keys? No, I left them in the car.

Où est ta robe rouge ? Je l’ai vendue hier.

Where is your red dress? I sold it yesterday.

Ses chemises sont belles ! Il les a bien repassées.

His shirts are beautiful! He ironed them well.
