The criminal broke into Mr. Dubois’ house. He broke a lock, broke a window and disabled the alarm system.

Une effraction est la destruction d’un système de fermeture qui empêche l’entrée dans un lieu, tandis qu’une infraction correspond à la violation d’une règle de droit.

A break-in is the destruction of a locking system that prevents entry into a place, while an infraction is the violation of a rule of law.

Infraction et effraction both come from the Latin infractio and effractus, that both mean to break. Also think of the word une fracture (une fracture du poignet is a wrist fracture).
