Advanced #54 Leur and lui in French

Learn how to use Leur as the plural of Lui within French sentences for advanced French learners my friend.

Leur is a “pronom personnel” which means “à eux” or “à elles”. It is the indirect complement of a verb. Leur is the plural of “lui” and never takes an s.

Un de mes élèves ne comprend pas la leçon, donc je lui explique calmement.

Plusieurs de mes élèves ne comprennent pas la leçon, donc je leur explique calmement.

One of my students doesn’t understand the lesson, so I explain it to him calmly.

Several of my students don’t understand the lesson, so I explain it to them calmly.

Il lui a fallu trois essais avant de réussir.

Il leur a fallu trois essais avant de réussir.

It took him three tries before he passed.

It took them three tries before they passed.

Demande-leur pourquoi ils ont décidé de se dérober ainsi.

Ask them why they decided to duck out like this.

Quand ils reprendront le sport, il leur faudra un peu de temps pour retrouver à la fois leur force musculaire et leur souplesse.

When they exercise again, it will take some time for them to regain both their muscular strength and flexibility.
