Le mythe d’Oedipe

The myth of Oedipus

Oedipe est un héros célèbre de la mythologie grecque.

Oedipus is a famous hero of Greek mythology.

Il est le fils de Laïos, roi de Thèbes, et de Jocaste.

He is the son of Laius, king of Thebes, and of Jocasta.

L’oracle de Delphes ayant prédit qu’il tuerait son père et épouserait sa mère, Oedipe est abandonné à sa naissance par ses parents.

The Oracle of Delphi having predicted that he would kill his father and marry his mother, Oedipus is abandoned at birth by his parents.

Il est recueilli et élevé par Polybos, roi de Corinthe.

He is adopted and raised by Polybos, king of Corinth.

Jeune homme, Oedipe consulte l’Oracle de Delphes, lequel lui révèle la terrible vérité. Sous le choc, il fuit Corinthe.

As a young man, Oedipus consults the Oracle of Delphi, which reveals the terrible truth to him. In shock, he fled Corinth.

Or il rencontre un étranger sur sa route et se dispute avec lui. Il s’agit de Laïos, son père. Oedipe le tue.

But he meets a stranger on his way and argues with him. This is Laïos, his father. Oedipus kills him.

Arrivé à Thèbes, il se bat avec le Sphinx et réussit à résoudre sa célèbre énigme, ce qui entraîne la mort du monstre.

Arrived in Thebes, he fights with the Sphinx and succeeds in solving his famous riddle, which leads to the death of the monster.

Créon offrant la couronne de Thèbes et la main de Jocaste au vainqueur du Sphinx, Oedipe est proclamé roi de Thèbes et épouse sa propre mère.

Creon offering the crown of Thebes and the hand of Jocasta to the victor of the Sphinx, Oedipus is proclaimed king of Thebes and marries his own mother.

Lorsque le couple découvre la vérité, Jocaste se pend. Oedipe se crève les yeux et part en exil avec sa fille Antigone.

When the couple finds out the truth, Jocasta hangs herself. Oedipus bursts his eyes and goes into exile with his daughter Antigone.
