Today I teach you how to use the pronoun “y” in French with a lot of examples my friend.

Some verbs can be used with the preposition “à” (and au, à la, à l’, aux) to introduce a complement, such as:

joindre une chose à une autre

acheter une chose à un endroit

courir à un rendez-vous

s’intéresser à une chose

The pronoun “y” will therefore be used to replace the complement:

Elle joint une photo à son message – Elle y joint une photo

J’achète mes habits au magasin du coin de la rue – J’y achète mes habits

Ils courent à leur rendez-vous car ils sont en retard – Ils y courent car ils sont en retard

Est-ce que vous vous intéressez à l’Antiquité romaine ? – Vous y intéressez-vous ?

She attaches a picture to her massage – She attaches a picture to it

I buy my clothes at the shop around the corner – I buy my clothes there

They run to their meeting because they are late – They run there because they are late

Are you interested in Roman Antiquity? – Are you interested in it?

When we talk about a place with “dans”, the pronoun is also “y”:

Le spectacle sera donné dans le plus grand théâtre de la ville – Le spectacle y sera donné

Nous déjeunons dans ce restaurant chaque samedi – Nous y déjeunons chaque samedi

Les patients sont soignés dans cet hôpital – Les patients y sont soignés

The show will take place in the biggest theatre of the city – The show will take place there

We have lunch in that restaurant each Saturday – We have lunch there each Saturday

Patients are being treated in that hospital – Patients are being treated there

When we talk about a place with “chez”, the pronoun is also “y”:

Je vais chez le coiffeur ce matin – J’y vais ce matin

Es-tu déjà allé chez elle ? – Y es-tu déjà allé ?

I go to the hairdresser this morning – I go there this morning

Have you ever been to her place? – Have you ever been there?

When we talk about a place with “sur”, the pronoun is also “y”:

Vous dansez sur le pont d’Avignon – Vous y dansez

You dance on the Avignon bridge- You dance there

Les photos ont été téléchargées sur le logiciel – Les photos y ont été téléchargées

The photos have been downloaded on that software – The photos have been downloaded on it

Elle a trouvé de magnifiques coquillages sur la plage – Elle y a trouvé de magnifiques coquillages

She found magnificent shells on the beach – She found magnificent shells there

When we talk about a place with “sous”, the pronoun is also “y”:

Un enfant se cache sous la table pour attribuer les parts de la galette des rois – Un enfant s’y cache pour attribuer les parts de la galette des rois

A child hides under the table to attribute each piece of the “galette des rois” – A child hides there to attribute each piece of the “galette des rois”

A little note about placement for composed verbs: the pronoun “y” is placed in front of both the auxiliary and the participe passé: elle y est allée
